"THALL SHALT NOT SPELL-CHECK THY MONUMENTS" TEN COMMANDMENTS MONUMENT ERECTED AT OKLAHOMA STATE CAPITOL

About three years ago the legislature in Oklahoma approved a measure to erect a monument of the Ten Commandments (does one have to capitalize the T and C in that line?) on the grounds of the state capitol, and last Thursday the monument was unveiled to a small group of onlookers.  Paid for by the family of Rep. Mike Ritze (R-Broken Arrow), the monument reflects the protestant version of the Big Ten, complete with a few misspelled werds...

For the record, I can't spell worth a damn, myself.  But I'm pretty sure I'd double-check before I carved something into granite.  Spell twice, chisel once...

Remember the "Sabbeth", to keep it holy (by including both "A"s...)

The ACLU will probably sue to have the monument removed, but I hope the Ritze family gets to pay for spelling corrections first.

Somehow, I doubt the business of the Okie state will be harmed or helped by a monument, regardless of clerical errors.  This is yet another of those meaningless provocations designed to inspire a "war on Christianity".  Liberals will whine about the separation of church and state, the religious right will rally the faithful, petitions will be started, and in the end the rule of law will prevail.

There's also a missing apostrophe. As an official member of the grammar police, I find that error more annoying than the idiosyncratic spelling of "maidseruant."

After all, it is Oklahoma.

I spent five years stationed in that backwards ass state - You get ten miles out of OKC and it is like something out of the Last Picture Show movie.

And, both Senators Jim Inhofe and Dr No Coburn come from Okiehoma.

Graduting 8th grade qualifies you to be called a genius in Midwest City...

How come no one ever puts "As you judge others, so you will be judged, the measure of mercy you show will be the measure you receive" in granite outside a courthouse?

Anon, because that's not in keeping with their Biblical interpretation of things. Judging is what separates "us" good folks from "them" others. You know, the "others"... (wink wink, nudge nudge)

If I ever stumble into a Christian doing anything remotely Christ-like I'll probably have a fucking heart attack.
