Every now and then I feel the need to remind folks of why I consider John Prine America's greatest living songwriter. This clip from a 1982 Johnny Cash show ought to help...
That's a picker named Vince Gill on guitar, with Marty Stuart on mandolin, and both singing the harmony behind Prine. INTRO BY CASH.
Prine was the primary reason I bought my first acoustic guitar at the age of 20. In the thirty-seven years since then I've not learned much beyond the three or four chords necessary to play his songs (albeit poorly), but damn if I don't enjoy hearing the man's songs from time to time.
John Prine is my favorite WABAC machine...

great stuff! seeing the johnny cash show as well! i had a mandolin a long time ago and I wish I had one again.
microdot, hell I can't figure out six strings on a wide fretted guitar, much less eight on a skinny necked mandolin!
I think illegal smile was my all time favorite.
Curmudgeon, "Hello in There" was the reason I bought a guitar. I love all of Prine's stuff, but that first album was killer.
I still cry every time I hear "Hello In There" This guy IS the best of the best ....
I an old eastern Kentucky boy and I've sung this song for years - and like you still just play a few cords.
